Ladies Lounge Appeal: One Year On - Law, Art and a Lasting Legacy

One year since the Supreme Court victory in the Ladies Lounge Appeal, ConMoto Group’s Catherine Scott and MONA’s Kirsha Kaechele were back together last week presenting a CPD at the Law Society of Tasmania.

The presentation “When the Law and Art Collide,” discussed the tension between the art and the law and how this drove (and at times derailed) the strategy behind this groundbreaking case.

The legal case contributed to Kirsha’s art installation becoming a beacon of strength and inspiration to women around the world – despite this not being the original intention of the piece. As lawyers we can (and probably should!) focus on the (of course always fascinating) nitty gritty of the law so Kirsha’s view was an interesting and refreshing insight into an artist’s perspective of the unique experience of court proceedings.

We’re delighted to welcome Dania Safiya to ConMoto!

A 2024 Bachelor of Law graduate from the University of Tasmania, Dania began her career at the Institute of Governance and Sustainable Development, where she focused on methane-mitigation litigation strategy and worked on issues surrounding Just Transition in relation to the UNFCCC.

After completing her PLT at the College of Law in June 2025, Dania jumped straight into contract reviews and client work here at ConMoto, drawn to our non-traditional approach and high-calibre, tech-savvy team. She’s especially interested in commercial and corporate practice with a focus on renewable-energy projects, while staying open to exploring other areas of law.

Last week, at the Opening of the Legal Year dinner, Cath was awarded the Law Society of Tasmania President’s Award for 2025, a prestigious annual award given to a person who has made an outstanding contribution to the Tasmanian legal profession and/or is an outstanding example to the legal profession.

If you were lucky enough to attend the dinner and hear Cath’s exceptional acceptance speech, then you know just how dedicated she is to the legal sector in Tasmania. In her career, not only has Cath excelled in terms of her contribution towards client work, but her contribution to progressing the legal system in Tasmania, and particularly the role of women within that system, is unparalleled.

What did you do over the long weekend?

Some of the ConMoto team chilled out with friends listening to the hottest 100 countdown. A few took full advantage of the weather and headed to the beach, some rode their bicycle a crazy distance just for fun, and others visited various Tassie cultural and culinary hot spots.

All of this pales into comparison with MD Gerry Connolly’s decision (made just a few weeks ago), to join a group (including his uber fit wife Meg) to RUN the Overland Track!

A huge shout-out to two of our fantastic team members for their incredible efforts at the challenging Point to Pinnacle run last weekend - the world’s toughest half marathon!

Jack broke the elusive 2-hour barrier with a remarkable time of 1:59:59, shaving minutes off last year’s result.Ray stormed home with an outstanding time of 1:57:36, setting the pace early for an amazing finish.

Clearly your dedication to those lunchtime training runs paid off. Congratulations on this fantastic achievement!

The celebration of the Court’s decision in the Mona “Ladies Lounge” appeal demonstrates what this decision means to women.

The Court recognised that the Ladies Lounge promoted equal opportunity by highlighting the lack of equal opportunity, which generally prevails in society, by providing women with a rare glimpse of what it is like to be advantaged rather than disadvantaged.

The “flipped universe” of the Ladies Lounge makes the point that gender inequality still exists despite “equality at law” and that it holds women back not through any fault of their own. There is power in reminding ourselves of that point.

'wfh' 'wfh too': Flexible working arrangements at ConMoto

What it's like working at a firm 'without' billable hours

‘Do and charge’ is an incredibly easy way to get paid. Start the clock, record your time, multiply by your rate and you’re done (more or less). With time being so easy to measure and ‘productivity’, ‘output’, ‘outcomes’, ‘value’ etc. being so hard to quantify, it’s no wonder the billable hour is the default option in most law and other professional services firms.

At ConMoto, we do use the billable hour, but we work hard to ensure it’s only ever one tool in the kit. We’ve developed two rules about the billable hour that we think form a really important part of our culture:

Coming up to our fifth birthday, we’ve been thinking about some of the things that have made working at ConMoto Group special.

Something that many of us have enjoyed from the start is the ConMoto running club. Every Tuesday and Thursday at lunchtime, a group of us head out for a 5km to 10km run.

Together we’ve made countless trips up and down the Hobart Rivulet and Queen’s Domain and participated in a number of local running events, especially Run the Bridge and Point to Pinnacle.
